THE LADY OF THE BARGE AND OTHER STORIES - By W. W. Jacobs
THE MONKEY’S PAW
I.

On a stormy night in a modest country house, a father and son sit hunched over a chessboard while the fire crackles in the hearth. Their quiet evening is interrupted by the arrival of Sergeant‑Major Morris, a weather‑worn traveler with stories of distant wars and exotic lands. Over whiskey and a warm kettle, he produces a small, dried monkey’s paw and begins to speak of an ancient spell that grants three wishes.
The cramped parlor fills with curiosity and unease as the sergeant‑major recounts the grim fate of the paw’s first owners, whose final wish brought death. He warns that meddling with destiny carries a heavy price, yet the idea of three magical wishes hangs tantalizingly in the air. Listeners must decide whether to pursue the unknown or leave the cursed talisman untouched.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
