Description

The story opens on the banks of the Floss, where the river rushes past Dorlcote Mill and the red‑tiled roofs of St Ogg’s. The landscape is vivid—green pastures, dark earth ready for sowing, and the ever‑present hum of ships on the water. Within this rural world lives the Tulliver family, a household bound by duty and the weight of inheritance, centered on the old mill that has sustained them for generations.

At the heart of the family are the restless Maggie and her brother Tom, whose contrasting natures set the tone for the tale. Maggie’s fierce imagination and yearning for freedom clash with the practical expectations placed on Tom, while their parents grapple with financial pressures and the arrival of distant relatives. As the siblings navigate school, friendships, and the pull of the river’s current, the narrative captures the delicate balance between personal desire and the constraints of a tightly knit community.
