A shuffling box of plaster casts and crumpled newspapers lands in the kitchen of Miss Esther Adams, and two practical women set about unpacking its contents with hatchet, screwdriver and a healthy dose of humor. Among the torn pages Tekla discovers a glossy advertisement for a matrimonial bureau, promising a match with “bankers, brokers, clergymen… farmers” for the price of a single dollar. The prospect of a farm, cows, chickens and a tidy white kitchen ignites her imagination, and she begins to picture a simple, bucolic future far from the cramped city abode she knows.
The story follows Tekla’s earnest, slightly naive quest to turn a cheap notice into a concrete plan, as she balances the mundane chores of domestic life with the tantalising promise of marriage and a new home. Along the way, the narrative playfully sketches the expectations of women, the absurdities of early matchmaking services, and the quiet determination that drives an ordinary girl to chase a brighter, if uncertain, horizon.
