Description

In the heat of Egypt’s campaign, the distant thunder of cannon fire reaches the drawing‑rooms of England, where women clutch the latest telegrams with trembling hands. Eveline, a young wife bound to the respectable but dull Sir Pagel, is haunted by the memory of a love left on the battlefield—a brave officer whose voice still lingers in her mind. As the news from Tel‑el‑Kebir trickles in, her heart swings between hope and dread, each dispatch a cruel reminder of the man she cannot touch.

Back at home, Eveline’s confidante Olive watches her friend’s anguish, warning of the danger in clinging to a vanished romance. Yet Eveline cannot silence the yearning that drives her to scour newspapers, to replay the songs he once sang, and to confront the stark contrast between her stifling marriage and the heroic world she imagines across the desert sands. The novel weaves together the turbulence of war abroad and the quieter battles of the heart, promising a tale of love, loyalty, and the restless spirit of a woman caught between duty and desire.
