A lethal plague known as the Red Death sweeps the land, painting victims in crimson before they die within minutes. Prince Prospero, refusing to surrender to fear, seals himself and a thousand courtiers inside an opulent, fortified abbey, filling it with music, dancers, and endless revelry. As the outside world succumbs to the disease, the prince declares that sorrow and doubt have no place behind his walls.
To celebrate their isolation, Prospero stages a grand masquerade held in a series of seven lavishly decorated chambers, each bathed in a different hue of light. The final, draped in black velvet, glows with a scarlet hue from the firelight, its ebony clock ever‑ticking, reminding guests of the relentless passage of time. In this glittering yet eerie setting, the revelers confront a paradox of extravagant denial and the looming shadow of mortality.

A master of mystery and the macabre, this American writer helped shape both modern horror and detective fiction. His poems and stories, including "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart," still feel eerie, sharp, and surprisingly modern.
