Description

Kenyon, a sculptor weary of Rome’s crowded winters, sets out for the quiet heights of Tuscany in search of fresh light and untamed beauty. He wanders through sun‑drenched valleys, sketches the faded frescoes of Giotto and Cimabue, and lets the vivid colors of Venetian palaces seep into his imagination. The journey itself becomes a pilgrimage of the senses, a chance to breathe the “purple air of Italy” that he hopes will revive his art.

His path leads to an isolated country house, its stone gate opening onto a solitary tower that crowns the Apennine hills. Covered in soft lichens and ancient moss, the tower bears the scars of centuries—iron‑barred windows, narrow loopholes, and battlements that once echoed with crossbow fire. As Kenyon stands before this venerable sentinel, the story invites listeners to follow his steps into a landscape where history and imagination intertwine, promising discoveries that linger long after the first summer sunrise.

Best known for The Scarlet Letter, this American master of dark, symbolic fiction turned guilt, secrecy, and moral conflict into unforgettable stories. His novels and tales still shape how readers imagine Puritan New England and the shadows of the human conscience.
