Description

A British army engineer recounts two years of life on the edge of the untamed African frontier while the Uganda Railway claws its way through the savannah. He paints a vivid picture of a landscape where rail ties and campfires coexist with endless horizons, swarms of insects and the distant call of wildlife. His straightforward voice lets listeners feel both the grandeur of the continent and the everyday hardships of men far from civilization.

The heart of his tale is the terrifying episode at Tsavo, where two enormous lions begin preying on workers, turning the construction site into a landscape of dread. He describes the sleepless nights perched on a shaky scaffold, the raw fear of hearing a roar nearby and the razor‑thin moments when a single shot might decide his fate. The narrative captures the relentless tension of outlasting predators that seem intent on adding the crew to their tally.

Beyond the lion saga, the book offers a series of smaller adventures—encounters with elephants, harrowing river crossings, and glimpses of local cultures—woven together with contemporary photographs. These sketches reveal a world in transition, inviting listeners to share the awe, danger, and unexpected camaraderie that defined early colonial life in East Africa.
