THE LION AND THE UNICORN
ON THE FEVER SHIP
THE MAN WITH ONE TALENT
THE VAGRANT
THE LAST RIDE TOGETHER - A SKETCH CONTAINING THREE POINTS OF VIEW
In a bustling Jermyn Street flower shop, two plaster figures—a lion and a unicorn—watch the city’s dramas unfold from their perch above the window. Their stone eyes hear the boisterous nights of Captain Carrington, whose maps turn into gambling tables and whose guests spill soda and laughter onto the street below. When the captain vanishes in a hurried departure, a veiled lady arrives, steals his portrait, and disappears as mysteriously as she came, leaving the shop silent and the statues unsettled.
Soon after, an American gentleman rents the adjoining rooms, drawn by the view of St. James’s graveyard and the curious presence of the regal ornaments. He greets the lion and unicorn as if they were old acquaintances, hinting at a hidden knowledge of their history. As he settles in, the statues sense a new chapter beginning, their timeless watchfulness poised to witness the next swirl of intrigue that will drift through the flower‑filled shop.
