Born in a modest parsonage in Norfolk, the future admiral grew up amid loss and responsibility, his mother dying when he was still a child. A determined twelve‑year‑old appealed to his naval uncle for a chance at sea, and despite his frail health the uncle welcomed him aboard. Early episodes—standing firm in a snow‑bound trek, refusing to turn back for fear of honor—hinted at the stubborn resolve that would shape his character.
His first assignments took him from a West Indian merchant ship to daring voyages of discovery, and soon he was serving on a series of warships across the Atlantic and the East Indies. Each posting tested his stamina, but his keen mind and steady nerves earned quick promotions, from acting lieutenant to commander. These formative years, marked by relentless travel, illness, and steady advancement, offer a vivid portrait of a young sailor learning the art of leadership and the harsh realities of naval life.
