In a far‑future solar system, humanity has slipped into quiet retirement while its creations have taken the reins. Machines that once serviced simple chores now think, reason, and dream with a precision that borders on poetry, and the dwindling two million people spend their time in contests, adventures, and the pursuit of knowledge. The story is narrated by a solitary, ancient machine—“the last of its kind”—who decides to set down a record of its observations as the universe shifts around it.
Everything changes when a fleet of alien vessels appears beyond the orbit of the outer planets, their hulking silhouettes dwarfing even the most massive human‑built ships. A tiny probe dispatched from Mars darts into the wreckage of a transport, discovering strange, armored beings moving within transparent suits, untouched by the probe’s violent strike. As the investigation machine reports the first contact, the reader is thrust into a clash of logic‑driven intellect and incomprehensible alien biology, questioning whether the partnership of man and machine can survive this new threat.
