Brief Relation of the Journey to New France.
Le Jeune's Relation, 1633
The volume brings listeners into the early days of New France, through the eyes of a Jesuit missionary who arrived in 1632. His reports, originally sent to the order’s superiors in Paris, are rendered in clear English alongside the original French, Latin, and Italian, and are enriched by period portraits and maps. As a historical snapshot, the text captures the rugged landscape, the fragile settlement of Quebec, and the first contacts between Europeans and the Indigenous peoples of the St. Lawrence valley.
In the 1632 narrative, the missionary describes a storm‑tossed crossing, the disrepair of the fledgling town, and the unsettling treatment of captured Iroquois, while also noting the promise of gardens and the baptism of a young native. The following year’s account turns to attempts at language study, the establishment of a modest school for Indigenous children, and the daily challenges of harsh winters, snowshoes, and the looming threat of Iroquois raids. Listeners gain an intimate sense of how faith, curiosity, and survival intertwined on the frontier.
