Description

In the sweltering heat of a remote Indian garrison, a small band of British officers and their native allies trudge through endless sand, their conversations a blend of dry wit and uneasy philosophy. Dr. George Dillon, a lanky Englishman in a mushroom‑shaped hat, muses about the futility of understanding the land and its people, while his younger companion, Lance Carlyon, offers clumsy verses that reveal both his innocence and the camaraderie that keeps morale afloat.

Against this backdrop, the men are charged with overseeing the construction of a massive canal that promises to reshape the region. Their duties pull them between the crumbling fort of Eshwara, the bustling river crossing, and the looming expectations of the Viceroy’s grand opening. As they navigate bureaucracy, local customs, and the ever‑present heat, the story paints a vivid portrait of colonial life—humorous, tense, and tinged with the quiet wonder of an unfamiliar world.
