Description

A restless young man named Broux finds himself in a cramped Paris inn, dreaming of higher ambition while the city swirls with the turmoil of the French Wars of Religion. He narrates his modest beginnings—straw‑filled chambers, steep staircases, and the humor of a tavern landlord—to contrast the lofty aspirations that pull him toward the courts of powerful dukes. The opening paints a vivid portrait of a world where loyalty to saints and sovereigns collides with personal honor.

As the brutal conflict between the king of Navarre, the Catholic League, and the Huguenots erupts, Broux becomes entangled with Monsieur le Duc, a fiery noble torn between duty and conscience. The duke’s reputation as a hot‑spurred defender of honor forces him to navigate a treacherous political landscape, while Broux wrestles with his own desire for recognition and the moral weight of the era’s violent choices. Listeners are invited into a richly detailed slice of 16th‑century France, where ambition, faith, and the promise of a white plume on a battlefield helm set the stage for a tale of restless courage.
