In the quiet harbor of Matsushima, where pine‑clad rocks rise like jewels from the sea, the city of Sendai rests beneath a timeless sky. The hills and ancient temples give the town a hushed reverence, and its people move through daily life with a gentle, almost sleepy rhythm that seems untouched by the restless tide of change.
When an English missionary and his wife arrive in a small boat, they set up a modest house near the venerable Zuigan‑ji temple and begin sharing their faith with the locals. Over the years, the villagers grow to cherish the pale teachers, and a quiet community of converts takes root beneath the pine‑scented breezes.
A decade later another English sailor reaches the same shore, drawn to the same serene beauty. He marries a shy, trusting girl from the village in a simple ceremony at the old mission house, then is torn away by duty, leaving behind letters that drift across oceans, barely reaching their intended hands.
