A young narrator looks back on a childhood shaped by hardship and quiet endurance. Her mother, widowed before she was twenty, struggled to keep a failing farm after the death of her first husband and a infant sister, while battling illness and relentless poverty. With the help of a stern but caring aunt, the family ekes out a meager existence, the mother’s eyes growing dim and her hope dwindling as each day passes.
Into this fragile world arrives William Preston, a prosperous farmer known as an old bachelor, whose presence stirs both curiosity and unease. As he becomes entwined with the family, the narrator begins to sense the subtle tensions that will later define the lives of the two half‑brothers growing up under his watchful eye. Their story unfolds against the stark, wind‑swept coast of Cumberland, where survival and affection intertwine in unexpected ways.
