CHAPTER II MRS. TRENCHARD
The story opens in a thick London fog that seems to swallow the familiar landmarks of Westminster, leaving only the muted sounds of a cab and a distant dog. At the heart of this haze stands No. 5, Rundle Square, a red‑brick house that has endured centuries of storms and change with a stoic propriety. Its iron gate, cobbled path and modest garden create a pocket of stillness that feels untouched by the restless progress of the city.
Inside, the house is inhabited by nineteen‑year‑old Henry Trenchard, who is lost in a book by the dying glow of a fireplace on a November evening in 1902. The drawing‑room, lined with green wallpaper and carpet, holds the same objects he has known since childhood, offering a comforting continuity amid the encroaching gloom. As the fog lingers, a ceremonial gathering looms, hinting at a disturbance that may test the house’s quiet resolve. Listeners are invited to follow Henry’s careful observations as the ordinary world subtly shifts toward something unknown.
