After his brother is shot by a constable, young Irish farmhand Dennis Conolly is pressed into the British Army and assigned to the Royal Mallows, a regiment of dispossessed Catholic tenants. The men carry a deep resentment toward the Crown and the landlords who dominate their homeland, secret meetings and whispered passwords hinting at a simmering rebellion. As they are sent abroad, the novel asks whether duty can ever outweigh the thirst for revenge.
The battalion arrives on the edge of the Nubian desert, where dawn turns the sand‑filled horizon into a pink ribbon against a cloudless sky. In this stark, bone‑strewn landscape the soldiers face a foreign enemy far from the fields of home, their internal conflicts clashing with the external threat. Listeners will be drawn into a tense exploration of identity, honor, and the cost of war.

Best known for creating Sherlock Holmes, this Scottish writer and physician helped define the modern detective story. His books range far beyond Baker Street, with adventures, historical fiction, and science fiction that still feel lively today.
