Formed in the summer of 1914, the First Buckinghamshire Battalion was shaped by the proud traditions of the Light Division, drawing on a deep esprit de corps that linked it to the historic exploits of the Peninsular War. From its first days in training, the men and officers embraced a spirit of initiative, ready to act wherever the situation demanded. Their reputation for determination and dash was quickly tested as they joined the 145th Brigade of the 48th South Midland Division, prepared to meet the demands of a war that would challenge every facet of their resolve.
When the Battle of the Somme erupted in July 1916, the battalion held back in brigade reserve, only to be called forward at short notice to seize a crucial point that would anchor the advance on the right. Under the leadership of Lieutenant‑Colonel Reynolds and bolstered by seasoned non‑commissioned officers, the troops launched a swift, hard‑fought attack that succeeded despite heavy casualties, including the loss of a brilliant company commander. Their action exemplified the resolve and cohesion that would become the hallmark of the unit throughout the conflict.
