CHAPTER X. THE GOLDEN GIANT.
Sheldon rides into a vast, untamed frontier called the Sasnokee‑keewan, a region locals call “No‑Luck Land.” Guided only by a fading trail and an uneasy feeling that he’s off course, he pushes deeper into tangled brush, iron‑bedded mountains and lingering patches of thawing snow, intent on proving himself a man of his own making. The harsh wilderness is described with vivid detail, from the roaring rivers to the rumor‑filled ridges where fifteen lakes might be seen at once.
Haunted by a betrayal that cost him both gold and a friend’s life, Sheldon abandons revenge and claims a “hunting trip” as an excuse to escape his guilt. With a pack of supplies, a rifle, and a restless heart, he wanders farther into the wild, seeking the solitude that might cleanse his bitterness. As the landscape grows more unforgiving, his inner struggle mirrors the raw, indifferent expanse around him, promising a tense journey of self‑discovery amid danger and isolation.
