Description

The narrator, a lone traveler bound by an ancestral summons, makes his way through a harsh winter toward a forgotten sea‑side town that has lingered since ancient times. The moon‑lit cliffs and twisting willows give way to the frost‑kissed rooftops of Kingsport, a maze of narrow lanes, crooked steeples and creaking wharves that seem to pulse with old, unknowable rites. He is reminded that the Yuletide celebrated here predates the familiar Christmas of distant lands, a secret festival kept once every century by a people who arrived from distant, orchid‑laden gardens. As snow drifts across the road, his thoughts turn to the strange customs his forebears preserved, a fragile thread of memory hanging over the cold night.

He arrives at the ancient stone house on Green Lane, lifts the heavy iron knocker and feels a faint, oily warmth seep from the doorway. Inside, shadows move as a low chant rises, hinting that the long‑forgotten festival may finally be revived.

1890–1937

A master of cosmic horror, this American writer turned fear of the unknown into some of the most influential weird fiction ever written. His stories introduced readers to ancient beings, fragile sanity, and a universe far larger—and colder—than humanity would like to believe.
