Description

Set in the summer of 1880, the novel follows a restless young scholar strolling through the historic streets of Holywell. He carries a small tortoise in his pocket, a symbol of his curiosity about the world beyond the rigid curricula of Oxford, and his mind drifts between ancient philosophy and the desire to create something original. As he approaches his tutor’s house, the narrative captures his inner conflict between conformity and imagination.

Inside the same town, Anna Stormer watches her husband, a meticulous academic, from a sun‑lit window, his habit of detached observation briefly broken by an unexpected admiration. Their quiet domestic tableau hints at unspoken tensions—her striking appearance and his exacting standards clash with the yearning for deeper connection. The story unfolds as both characters navigate the constraints of their era, seeking moments of authenticity amid expectation.
