In a quiet October night on two neighboring farms, two ordinary straw scarecrows become the focus of a young boy’s imagination. Jimmy and his sister Stella dress the figures with gifts—a knife’s edge of foil, a silver ribbon—turning simple farm props into characters named Mr. Maudsley and Mr. Trunk. When Jimmy watches through a silver spyglass, one of the scarecrows appears to dance in the moonlight, an impossible movement that shatters the children’s bedtime stories.
The whispered excitement spreads at breakfast, and the adults remain oblivious, dismissing the names as harmless games. Yet Jimmy is convinced he has uncovered a secret that could change everything about the fields that stretch beyond the house. Listeners are invited to follow the children’s investigation, feeling the cold wind through corn and the uneasy curiosity that rises with every creak of the old farmstead.

A master of eerie pulp fiction, this Minneapolis-born writer filled magazines like Weird Tales with stories of horror, fantasy, science fiction, and crime. His work helped shape the strange, uncanny mood that readers still love in classic genre fiction.
