The Dancers
After eight years aboard the colony ship Elpis, a carefully chosen group of scientists, politicians, and specialists has finally reached a dark, wind-swept planet orbiting Proxima. Earth is no longer a home to return to: its sun has inexplicably vanished, leaving the survivors to imagine a frozen world where the remaining people burrow underground for warmth. As the colonists wait for dawn, old arguments about knowledge, progress, and humanity’s failure to understand the universe resurface.
Their first encounter with the planet’s inhabitants has already ended in violence, leaving the settlers uneasy and divided. Why did a primitive group attack visitors descending from the sky—and what ceremony might the newcomers have interrupted? Haunted by the dead and uncertain of their place on this strange world, the colonists must confront more than unfamiliar weather and alien customs. They must decide whether their advanced civilization has truly learned wisdom, or merely gathered more powerful ways to make mistakes.

A pioneering voice in mid-century science fiction and fantasy, Margaret St. Clair filled her stories with sharp humor, myth, ecological themes, and wonderfully strange ideas. Writing as both Margaret St. Clair and Idris Seabright, she created imaginative worlds that remain distinctive and underappreciated.
