Description

Set against the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley in the spring of 1862, the story follows a young man named Ephraim Sykes—known locally as “Old Grizzly”—who is more thoughtful than his rugged nickname suggests. As the Civil War rages and armies stir, Ephraim works in the town’s ironworks, quietly perfecting clever gadgets and mechanical toys for the boys of Staunton. His quiet intelligence and steady gray eyes hint at a strength that belies his shy demeanor.

Living with his aging aunt, whom he supports with the modest profits from his inventions, Ephraim has built a small library of scientific and mathematical texts that fuel his restless curiosity. Though his neighbors assume he hoards wealth, his frugal habits conceal a deeper purpose: to turn his inventive spark into something that might matter beyond the workshop walls. When rumors of advancing troops reach the valley, Ephraim’s world of gears and gizmos is poised to intersect with the larger turmoil of war.

Adventure, empire, and far-off frontiers run through these lively late-Victorian tales, which often send young heroes into danger on land and sea. His books draw on New Zealand, the Pacific, and other colonial settings, giving them a strong sense of movement and place.
