CHAPTER X - A LADIES’ DAY IN CAMP
In a comfortable suburb, the Archibalds enjoy a prosperous, settled life. Mr. Hector Archibald is a sprightly, unconventional man who delights in novelty, while his wife clings to tradition and the well‑known rules of domestic happiness. Their only daughter, Kate, has blossomed into a beautiful, sensible young woman who is about to marry the respectable lawyer Rodney Bringhurst.
As the wedding approaches, a lively dispute erupts over the old‑fashioned honeymoon tradition. Kate, eager to begin married life at home, proposes that her parents take the entire wedding‑trip as a gift, leaving the newlyweds to settle straight away. Hector embraces the idea with enthusiasm, but Mrs. Archibald worries that abandoning the custom would betray her deep‑seated values. Their differing views set the stage for a charming clash of generations, humor, and heartfelt compromise.
