This intimate collection of poems, written between 1913 and 1915, moves between the natural world and the troubled human one. A thrush singing before dawn opens visions of childhood, first love, ancient landscapes, and spiritual mystery, while clear skies, summer fields, flowers, and birds are rendered with luminous precision.
Against this beauty, the poems place the devastation of war: young soldiers dying in battle, shattered bodies beneath a peaceful sun, and the moral anguish of those who remain unsacrificed. Yet the collection also finds tenderness in remembrance, devotion, and the idea that love can survive through sacrifice.
Other poems turn toward personal wonder, celebrating a child’s dark eyes as a mysterious inheritance passed through generations. Rich in musical language and vivid contrasts, these verses invite listeners to linger over fleeting moments—dawn, wind, harvest, memory—and to consider how innocence, grief, nature, and faith exist together in an unsettled age.
