In a waking forest drenched in early‑morning mist, the ancient realm of Tapiola stirs to the sound of a silver flute and the chanting of blue‑eyed sprites. At its heart lives Tapio, the sovereign of the woods, his beloved consort Mimerkki, and a host of fae—forest maidens, mischievous spirits, and wandering hunters—each bound to the land’s hidden rhythms. The opening scene follows a young wanderer named Lippo, who drifts between dream and reality as the forest’s music lulls and then awakens him.
Lippo’s reverie is shattered by the croaking of a sinister crow, the harbinger of the dreaded Hiiden Hengetär, whose promises of power echo through the trees. An old shepherd, the keeper of Tapiola’s cattle, confronts the bird and warns Lippo of brewing discord between the forest’s guardians and the looming threat. As the sun climbs, Lippo must decide whether to linger in the enchanted safety of the woods or step into a tangled path where ancient spirits and human folly clash.

A Finnish poet remembered for lyrical, nature-filled verse, he became widely known around the turn of the 20th century and remained a distinctive voice in Finnish literature. Writing under a pen name, he blended folk-song warmth with a more personal, often melancholy tone.
