In the elegant Budapest residence of the Herberts, every Wednesday becomes a ritual of polished ceremony. The grand salon fills with high‑ranking officials, military families and a throng of women, all careful to observe the household’s strict decorum. Beneath the gleaming surface, the hosts exude a chilling formality that leaves their guests feeling more like ornaments than participants. The couple’s wealth, built on political ties and a fortune‑making marriage, is matched only by their obsession with propriety.
The evening takes an unexpected turn when a flamboyantly shaved, daring young man is coaxed onto the dance floor for a provocative quadrille, shaking the composure of the older judges and ministers. A sudden fainting spell among the ladies sparks a hushed panic, prompting the host to smooth over the incident to protect his reputation. As whispers spread through the smoking room, Herbert’s resolve to end these “pairing Wednesdays” begins to solidify, hinting at a shift in the tightly controlled world of his social circle.
