Description

Set against the trembling hills of a World War I front, the narrative follows a solitary soldier, András, who rests on a moss‑covered stone while the forest canopy shivers above. He watches the distant artillery, shares a cautious drink of water with a wandering Gypsy, and clings to a handful of letters from home that whisper of his mother and his beloved. Through his quiet humming of old folk tunes, the story reveals a man caught between duty and the yearning for ordinary peace.

The book unfolds as a mosaic of modest episodes – boys gathering mushrooms, red wildflowers peeking through the woods, a stray swallow seeking shelter, a cat prowling a village yard, and a young hero’s first trials. Each vignette paints the lives of people for whom scarcity is a constant companion, yet whose moments of humor, tenderness, and stubborn hope shine vividly. Listeners will be drawn into a world where the great drama of history is filtered through intimate, everyday struggles, leaving a lingering sense of empathy and resilience.
