Description

A vivid snapshot of life in the Hungarian plain at the close of the 19th century, this collection strings together short, sharply observed tales of peasants, soldiers and the occasional oddball who drift through their world. The narrator moves from a shepherd’s quiet night‑time tally of his flock to a bustling tavern where lantern light fights the encroaching fog, capturing the humor, superstition and small cruelties that color daily existence.

Among the ensemble, the reader meets a weary farmhand caught in a tense dispute over a missing lamb, a group of conscripts haggling over a simple dinner, and a weather‑worn innkeeper who seems to know every secret whispered in his rooms. The stories are told in a plain yet lively voice, letting the characters’ rough edges and their stubborn hopes shine through without spilling the later twists that await them. This portrait of Szeged’s countryside feels both intimate and timeless, inviting listeners to linger over each slice of life.
