Description

In a modest country town, Sylvia lives as the respectable wife of the prosperous merchant Philip. Their home is filled with fine silks, comfortable furnishings, and the expectation that she will devote herself to genteel domesticity rather than the open fields she once loved. While Philip strives to surround her with luxury and to honor her mother, Sylvia feels a quiet disquiet, recalling a life of simple labor with her animals and the boundless sky beyond the parlour walls.

Beneath the polished surface, Sylvia’s spirit bears the lingering ache of past hardships and a lingering numbness toward both hope and fear. Philip, ever attentive, devises gentle schemes to awaken her dormant passions, hoping to coax a more assertive will from the woman he adores. Their relationship teeters between affectionate devotion and the unspoken yearning for something beyond the constraints of propriety, setting the stage for a subtle but compelling exploration of love, duty, and the yearning for freedom.
