HANRAHAN'S VISION.
THE DEATH OF HANRAHAN.
On a flickering Samhain night, a barn in a rural Irish town hums with the low murmur of men gathered around a fire. Red Hanrahan, a tall, red‑haired hedge schoolmaster, arrives to deliver a message that has traveled from his lover, Mary Lavelle, whose mother has just died. The news carries a pressing warning: unless Hanrahan secures a marriage before the month’s end, the little plot of land she hopes to inherit will be given away. The atmosphere crackles with old songs, whispered cards, and the restless energy of a community poised on the edge of change.
Determined, Hanrahan vows to leave at once, insisting the children can manage without him for a night and promising to return with news of his union. He refuses a parting drink and a final song, his mind already marching toward Gilcreest. As he steps through the door, a gaunt old stranger lays a withered hand on his and mutters a cryptic warning, hinting that the night may hold more than just a simple journey.

1865–1939
A towering voice of Irish poetry and one of the key writers of literary modernism, he joined myth, politics, love, and the supernatural in verse that still feels vivid today. His work ranges from dreamy early lyrics to sharp, unforgettable poems like those of his later years.
