In a quiet Flemish village, a young orphan named Nello lives with his loyal companion Patrasche, a sturdy, amber‑coated dog whose presence feels as essential as breath. Together they occupy a modest mud‑hut at the edge of the town, its whitewashed walls overlooking a patchwork of corn fields, poplars, and a winding canal. Their days are marked by simple, shared routines—feeding the dog, tending a garden of beans and pumpkins, and listening to the distant chime of the village bell that seems to echo their own fragile hopes.

The household is completed by old Jehan Daas, a crippled veteran who took the boy in after his sister’s death, offering a steady, gentle guidance despite his own hardships. Their world is one of scarcity, where a crust of bread and a handful of cabbage become treasured comforts, yet the bond between child and dog glows with an unspoken resilience.
