Description

A restless Highland youth, born in the remote glens of Scotland, escapes the familiar croft for the marble halls of the Scots College in Rome. There he befriends a charismatic Irish priest and falls under the sway of a flamboyant foreign regiment serving the Spanish king in Italy. Between scholarly lectures and bustling Roman taverns, he discovers a world of intrigue, learning to read coded dispatches and to wield a musket with equal dexterity.

His newly earned commission as a lieutenant thrusts him into the heat of the Battle of Velletri, where youthful bravado meets the harsh clang of steel. A daring secret mission sends him racing northward, clutching money and messages meant for the exiled Prince Charles, and forces him into uneasy alliances with thieves, nobles, and old foes alike. As loyalties shift and danger looms, he must decide whether to cling to his Highland roots or be reshaped by the volatile courts and battlefields of Europe.
