Span Trap
After seventeen years at the same dull job and with no hope of changing her lonely life, Mona Wilson decides that suicide is the simplest answer. When she awakens, she finds herself in a hazy blue-gray world that resembles her old roominghouse—but is unmistakably somewhere else. The familiar staircase, cryptic neighbors, and strange word “permeo” offer no explanation for what has happened.
Venturing into a shadowy plaza, Mona discovers an impossible globe suspended overhead and a monument covered with figures that seem to climb endlessly toward its unseen summit. The landscape feels both recognizable and profoundly wrong, as though her old life has been rebuilt according to unfamiliar rules. As Mona searches for meaning in this eerie afterlife, she must confront the unsettling possibility that death has not freed her from the choices, habits, and limitations she hoped to escape. This concise science-fiction tale blends melancholy, dark humor, and surreal mystery.
