Description

In a remote village tucked beneath a smoky thatched roof, the night comes alive with the crackle of three smouldering logs and the rhythmic beating of elders’ palms. A weary traveler, fresh from mountain passes, is ushered inside the bure, where the air is thick with ash, the scent of cooked yams, and the low hum of restless mosquitoes. As the fire casts flickering shadows, the storyteller Bongi begins weaving tales of distant stone cities, invisible cords beneath the sea, and steam‑powered caravans that race across land faster than any horse.

Around him, skeptical elders trade barbs, recalling their own myths of canoes that could bend mountains and debating whether foreign inventions might be truth or boastful exaggeration. Their exchange of nambu—the prized gifts offered for captivating yarns—highlights a vibrant oral tradition that binds community, honor, and the ever‑shifting line between legend and fact. Listeners are drawn into a world where every story is a contest of imagination, and the fire’s glow promises more revelations to come.
