SOME TOWN
In Monte Vista, Sheriff Joe Cook is trying to keep order, sell a valuable herd of cattle, and make sense of an anonymous warning that gunmen may soon descend on town. His deputy, Shorty McKay, is less focused on official duties than on Belle Haynes, the beautiful telephone operator working alone at the exchange. When the sheriff leaves Shorty in charge, he expects his deputy to stay put—but Shorty has other ideas.
As the evening train brings an unusually large crowd of travelers to the Red Spruce Hotel, the quiet frontier town begins to feel distinctly uneasy. The sheriff’s cattle deal, the mysterious warning, and Shorty’s determination to check on Belle all pull the town’s characters toward a night of uncertainty. Blending Western atmosphere, homespun humor, romance, and suspense, this lively tale follows ordinary people as trouble gathers just beyond the lamplight.
