The story opens on a damp November afternoon, when the weak winter sun briefly pierces the leaden sky over Shenstonen Park. Lady Ingleby, wrapped in a fur coat, wanders the empty balcony of a towering stone house, listening to the quiet patter of rain and the rustle of the last golden leaves. Her tiny white terrier, restlessly darting about, provides a bittersweet contrast to the stillness, hinting at a longing for the husband who is away at war.
Inside the mansion, a single room glows with a warm, reddish light, promising comfort and home despite the surrounding cold. A solemn messenger arrives with a letter, and Lady Ingleby reads it with a mix of hope and anxiety. The atmosphere is one of waiting— for the first snow, for the war to end, and for the spring that might finally bring the family back together.
