Description

Goldsmith’s lively comedy opens in the countryside home of the Hardcastles, a couple whose affection for old ways and genteel manners sets the stage for a series of amusing miscommunications. Their son, Charles, is sent to court the fashionable Miss Hardcastle, but his father’s house is mistaken for an inn, leading the shy young man to believe he may treat the Hardcastle daughters as servants. The resulting confusion sparks a charming clash between city sophistication and rustic hospitality.

Meanwhile, the suitors and servants weave their own tangled schemes, each trying to outwit the others while revealing the pretensions and proprieties of 18th‑century society. Goldsmith balances witty dialogue with warm humour, allowing characters to flit between earnest affection and clever deception. Listeners will enjoy the brisk pacing, lively banter, and the gentle satire that makes this early English comedy feel both timeless and delightfully specific.

Best known for the novel The Vicar of Wakefield, the poem The Deserted Village, and the comedy She Stoops to Conquer, this Anglo-Irish writer moved easily between fiction, poetry, essays, and the stage. His work blends warmth, wit, and sharp observations about 18th-century society.
