Description

A young samurai, once loyal to his lord in Kyoto, is forced into exile when his patron falls. To secure a new position he abandons his gentle first wife and marries a woman of higher standing, only to discover that his new marriage is cold and unfulfilling. Haunted by memories of the woman he loved, he grows increasingly remorseful, dreaming of her loom and the quiet strength she offered during his hardships.

When his service finally ends, the samurai resolves to return to Kyoto and beg forgiveness from his first wife. He arrives under a bright moon, finds her modest home in disrepair, and, after pushing open a silent sliding door, is startled by a soft glow from a small room. There, by the light of a paper lamp, she sits sewing, her eyes meeting his with a calm smile, and she asks simply, “When did you come back?” The story lingers on the bittersweet moment of reconnection, inviting listeners to wonder how the samurai will make amends.
