Part 1
In a remote desert installation shrouded in layers of classified secrecy, a handful of scientists and engineers are kept under constant surveillance. Sam Lewis, a top‑level atomic engineer, shares a tentative bond with Betty Seton, a renowned physicist whose clearance is deliberately limited. Their whispered meetings become a fragile stand against the dehumanizing routine of the project.
One night, after a night of heavy drinking, Sam awakens in Betty’s cramped apartment, haunted by the feeling that they are “the living dead.” The sterile corridors, the white‑helmeted guards, and the ever‑present threat of mental “clearing” press on his mind, forcing him to weigh a desperate escape against the crushing weight of his own integrity. He knows that any attempt to flee could cost not only his life but also Betty’s mind.
As the desert night deepens, Sam steps into the shadows, his heart racing with a mix of bitterness and a faint spark of defiance. The story follows his tense, claustrophobic struggle to reclaim agency in a world where security has become a weapon of psychological control.
