Description

Born in Calcutta to a well‑placed East‑India Company family, the future novelist spent his first years amid the bustle of colonial life before losing his father and being sent to England for education. At the austere Charterhouse school he found little affection for rigid classical drills, yet his sharp eye for human folly began to surface in the satirical sketches and verses he scribbled for classmates. A brief stint at Cambridge followed, where he absorbed literature and roamed the city’s cafés, dreaming of a life beyond the confines of lecture halls.

After leaving university, he wandered through Paris, Rome, Dresden and Weimar, absorbing art and gossip that would later flavor his prose. A short, uneasy apprenticeship in law quickly gave way to a restless turn toward journalism, where his biting wit found a public outlet. In 1836 he married Isabella Shaw, an Irish earl’s daughter, a partnership that promised stability but soon dissolved, thrusting him back into the precarious world of a fledgling writer striving to support his young family.
