Arthur Holly is a seasoned trainer who knows the rhythm of the track and the temperament of every horse that steps into his stable. When a shady dealer pushes him to buy a mangy, “plug” of a horse at a bargain price, Arthur’s instinct tells him something is off. He watches the animal disappear into the hands of a thin, bespectacled scientist who seems to view horses as more than just sport—perhaps as a laboratory.
The scientist soon proposes a partnership: Arthur would train the horses while gaining a slice of ownership in a rundown stable that he’s bought for a pittance. His plan, hinted at in cryptic instructions and a pair of binoculars, suggests he wants to “replace the horse” with something far stranger than a simple race‑winner. Arthur’s skepticism deepens, but curiosity and the promise of a fresh venture pull him onto a track where science and superstition collide, setting the stage for an uneasy alliance.
