RED OLEANDERS
BY RABINDRANATH TAGORE
In a hidden palace perched behind a lattice of patterned windows, the world hums with the clatter of tunnel‑diggers and the scent of rare red oleanders. Nandini, a determined young woman, encounters Kishôr, a laborer who risks punishment to bring her the elusive flowers, promising that each blossom is a token of his devotion. Their exchange reveals a fragile bond forged in secrecy, as Kishôr guards his lone oleander tree like a treasured secret, while Nandini worries for his safety amidst the harsh overseers.
The atmosphere shifts when a scholarly Professor enters, treating Nandini as both muse and mystery. He waxes poetic about the underground city’s endless quest for gold, the ghostly king hidden behind a net of power, and the philosophical notion that “clothing defines us.” His conversation hints at a looming plan to summon a jinn of dead wealth, suggesting that the characters’ personal stakes are tangled with a larger, perhaps dangerous, ambition.
