Tim Murphy’s impulsive decision to join a violent strike and strike a deputy sheriff lands him a two‑year sentence, a fate that shatters his modest family. His wife Maggie endures hardship, caring for a newborn while grief gnaws at her, and his mother, Mrs. Murphy, cannot bear to see her son behind bars. The old man Mike, once a simple village laborer, is torn between loyalty to his son and the harsh realities of the law.
Determined to free Tim, Mike teams up with Father Maurice, a kindly parish priest, and travels to the state capital to plead with the Governor. The Governor, a stern and unforgiving man, also happens to be the very youth Mike once tormented, adding a bitter layer of personal history to the appeal. Their meeting in the ornate reception room sets the stage for a tense confrontation where past grievances clash with a desperate hope for mercy.

Best remembered for the wonderfully absurd "Pigs Is Pigs," this prolific American humorist turned everyday mix-ups and small-town life into lively, sharply observed comedy. His work ranges from short stories and essays to novels, with a playful style that still feels fresh.
