Description

A bitter summer drift of ice threatens a cramped trading schooner as it pushes toward an unforgiving shore. On deck stands Dick Walton, a polished young man still raw from his father's harsh criticisms and a lifetime of expectations he can't meet. Around him, a blue‑eyed Swede and a weather‑worn Eskimo barter with survival, their uneasy conversation hinting at ancient knowledge of the frozen sea. The tension between refined education and primal endurance sets the stage for a clash of cultures and personal grudges.

The schooner's hull shudders as ice scrapes against steel, forcing the crew into a precarious dance of navigation and survival. Walton watches the men around him—Hanson the silent captain, the grizzled Swede, the greasy Eskimo—and measures each against the bitter lessons his father left him. His inner monologue drifts between contempt for their rough ways and a reluctant admiration for their hard‑won skill. As the vessel slips deeper into the pack, the listener is pulled into a stark, breath‑free world where pride, heritage, and the relentless Arctic test every choice.
