Das Los des ElendenTräume - Vom Tiger zum Haken
A small town is gripped by an unsettling omen: a black‑winged mouse, birthed by a mysterious witch, is whispered to be the devil’s child. The locals chatter in hushed tones about strange suns that hover over the winter sky, each one a silent weight pressing down on their homes. Rumors of disease, foreign armies and demonic forces swirl, while everyday life is swallowed by superstitions and desperate prayers.
Amid the dread, fragile figures emerge—Jermil, a mute son who hides away in a rubbish pit, and Aljonka, a railway foreman's daughter whose tragic fate becomes a chilling symbol of the town’s terror. Neighbors gather in candlelit rooms, swapping stories of visions, cursed bells and haunting dreams that seem to foretell an inevitable disaster. As the community braces for the unknown, the atmosphere thickens with dread, curiosity, and a yearning for some glimmer of hope.

A major voice of Russian modernism, his writing moves through folklore, dreams, satire, and the uncanny with a style that feels both old-world and startlingly strange. His life took him from student arrest and exile to émigré years in Paris, and that sense of upheaval runs through much of his work.
