Description

In a rural Irish parish remembered through the eyes of an elderly narrator, the past comes alive with dancing schools, lively young people, village characters, and the teasing rivalries of country life. At the center is Mícheál Thaidhg, a nimble young dancer with little money, who faces an embarrassing problem: he must find a shilling for the dancing master and another for the piper before the week is out.

Around him is a colorful community of parents, shopkeepers, egg sellers, musicians, and self-appointed experts. The local shopkeeper, Stiobhna Ó Múrnáin, is hauled before the magistrates after the police claim to have discovered evidence of illicit whiskey-making—but his confident answers make the courtroom far more entertaining than intimidating. Told with affectionate humor and a keen eye for speech and character, this story offers a warm portrait of village life, youthful mischief, and the comic struggles behind an ordinary country dance.
