PLACEBO
An impossible machine appears in the middle of Main Way, carrying a frantic traveler from another version of 1955. Darwin Lenner has already passed through four different years bearing the same date, and each one has been worse than the last. Now his time machine refuses to work, leaving him stranded among people who regard his technological crisis with surprising calm.
Philip Corrigan, a barefoot philosopher with an unusual talent for reading minds, offers to help. Corrigan’s world is a bewildering contrast to Lenner’s: its residents live freely, work very little, and seem unconcerned with the rigid rules and anxieties that shaped Lenner’s life. As Corrigan leads his reluctant guest on a tour, Lenner struggles to understand a society that appears both idyllic and deeply unsettling.
With playful humor and a distinctly speculative edge, the story explores confidence, perception, and the possibility that reality may depend as much on expectation as machinery. It is an intriguing science-fiction adventure for listeners who enjoy clever ideas, eccentric characters, and alternate visions of the future.
