Transcriber’s Notes
Perched on the bluffs overlooking the gentle flow of the Illinois River, this 5,180‑acre park blends natural beauty with a touch of early American history. A modest white cross marks the spot where Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet first arrived in the region in 1673, inviting visitors to imagine the explorers’ first steps. The landscape shifts through the seasons, from bright spring dogwoods to deep summer forests, offering endless vistas.
The stone lodge, built from native rock and timber, serves as the park’s hub, with comfortable guest rooms, a spacious dining hall and a massive fireplace that warms the lounge in cooler evenings. Outdoor amenities include a seasonal swimming pool, a modest nine‑hole golf course, shuffleboard and horseshoe courts, all within walking distance of the trailheads. Visitors can wander miles of footpaths that lead to scenic overlooks, rent rowboats from the modern dock, or explore fourteen miles of bridle paths on horseback. Summer youth groups also enjoy well‑equipped campgrounds with kitchens and pools, adding a lively community feel to the tranquil setting.
